TNG 11.1.2 Upgrade

Installation Instructions

1. Get the upgrade files. OK, you've probably already done this, but let's review anyway. The file you downloaded should be called tngupdate11x-1112.zip. Extract or "unzip" the files included in tngupdate11x-1112.zip to a temporary location on your hard drive. Some files should extract into subfolders called 'css', 'font', 'js', 'languages' and 'templates'.

2. Back up settings and custom files, other preparation.   |   Show instructions

   If you haven't done so lately, please make a backup of the following important files before proceeding (you might need them later, even if nothing goes wrong here):

   • config.php (general settings)
   • footer.php or footer.html (custom footer)
   • importconfig.php (import settings)
   • index.php or index.html (your home page!)
   • logconfig.php (log settings)
   • mapconfig.php (map settings)
   • meta.php (custom meta data & scripting)
   • mmconfig.php (mod manager settings)
   • css/mytngstyle.css (style sheet)
   • pedconfig.php (pedigree settings)
   • templateconfig.php (template settings)
   • topmenu.php or topmenu.html (custom header)

   A note on the custom header, footer, home page and mytngstyle.css stylesheet: If you're using a post-8.1.0 template, remember that the files you'll want to back up are the ones in the templates/template# folder (where # is the template number). If you never customized these files directly, then you don't actually need to back them up.

   You might also want to back up your database tables (using Admin/Utilities), your table structure (same place), and any TNG files that you may have altered, although the risk for data loss during this upgrade is very minimal.

   If you have installed any mods, please remove them before installing this upgrade. Look for updated versions to install after the upgrade is complete.

   
   

3. Upload them. Upload all the files and folders (except the "templates" folder, which will be covered later) to the main TNG area on your web site. For many of you, the main TNG area will be the "public_html" folder. Be sure to overwrite existing files that have the same names. Note: The folders contained in this zip file do not contain all of the files that are supposed to be in the same folders on your site. Only files that have changed since the last release are included. If your upload program will erase the unchanged files when you upload these smaller folders with the same names, then be sure to merge the folders instead.

4. Open this readme file from your site. If you previously opened this file from your local computer, close it now and open it again from your web site (for example, "http://www.mysite.com/readme11x-1112.html"). Use a browser, not an FTP program! The file should be among the files you just uploaded.

5. Update your template.   |   Show instructions

   If you're using a template and haven't customized any of the actual template files, or if you're using a TNG template that you installed prior to 8.1.0, or if you're not using a template at all (but might in the future), then upload the entire templates folder included in this upgrade.

   If you're using a post-8.1.0 template and you have customized the index.php, topmenu.php or footer.php files, then upload everything in the templates folder that you haven't customized (all the templates you're not using, and all the files from your template that you haven't touched). You may also want to examine the new versions of the files that you've changed to see if you'd like to merge in the changes. NOTE: Many of the template home page, header and footer files have been updated to include mobile support. In order to experience those features, you will need to incorporate the latest changes to these files.

   If you're using a TNG template that you installed prior to 8.1.0, you'll need to locate the folder for your template (i.e., "template6") within the upgrade files (not all templates were changed, so don't worry if you don't find it). If you don't remember which template you're using, compare your site to this page: http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/templates.php). Once you have found it, do the following:

   1. Upload all files in the css and img folders to the main css and img folders on your site (not the ones within any of the template folders).

   2. Copy any custom images you were using with your home page or custom header or footer from the main TNG folder into the new img folder. Do not delete them from their original locations just yet. If you changed the color of your TNG tabs, then also copy the tngtab.png and tngtabactive.png files to the img folder.

   3. If you want to use the new Template Settings capability with your existing template files, copy the new footer.php, index.php, and topmenu.php files to your TNG folder, overwriting existing files with the same names (see Template Settings on the TNG Wiki for more information). If you have previously customized your template home page or header and footer, overwriting these files will cause you to lose your customizations, so in that case you might decide to skip this step. If you do skip this step, the new Template Settings will NOT update your home page or headers. IMPORTANT: TNG will look for the same Custom Header and Custom Footer in each template. If you are not using the default names for your header and footer (topmenu.php and footer.php), you will see errors when you try to switch templates unless you ensure that you also have files with those names in each template folder.

   4. If you want to use the new Template Switching capability, go to Admin/Setup/Template Settings and set "Enable Template Selection" to Yes. If you then select a template number on that same page, TNG will use the home page, header/footer and style sheet for that template from the "templates" folder. To customize any of those templates, edit the files in the corresponding folder within "templates". Selecting no template number will show your site as it is now.

6. Clear your cache.   |   Show instructions

   It isn't always necessary, but if things aren't working properly after the upgrade, it could just be that some of the old files or pages are still stuck in your browser cache. Before asking for help, please clear your cache and check your results again. NOTES:

The update should be complete. You did it! If anything doesn't look right, please try the following before asking for support:

1. Review all the instructions again. Make sure you didn't miss something!
2. Edit your browser history and delete the temporary Internet files (sometimes called the "cache"), then refresh the page.
